Toyota GR GT makes dynamic debut at 2026 Tokyo Auto Salon

Toyota’s latest high-performance sports car, the GR GT, made its global debut last month. The car was recently presented, alongside the GR GT3, as part of a dynamic showcase at the ongoing Tokyo Auto Salon.

As expected, Toyota had a huge presence at this year’s event, with the GR GT being the main attraction. Besides the static display, Toyota ran the GR GT and the GT3 version on a makeshift track outside the main hall. The organizers had set up a track to demonstrate the car’s straight-line performance, while another parking lot was modified into a temporary skid pan.

The new Toyota GR GT looks great in the flesh, but the same can’t be said about the exhaust note, which could’ve been louder. The GT3, on the other hand, makes a better sound.

The road version uses a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine paired with a single electric motor. It produces 640 hp and 627 lb-ft of torque and is mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. The race car is built to GT3 specifications and features the same twin-turbo V8 engine, but without the hybrid system.
